To Breast Feed Or Not? That is the Question!
Every soon to be mother will be have too make that inevitable decision. Should I breast feed, use formula, or maybe even do a combination of both? The answer to that question is fairly simple, and it really all just depends on what your goals are, and what your environment will allow. Their are disadvantages and benefits of both, and their is no “right way” to go.
Breast milk has more nutrients than formula and is much better for your baby. Unfortunately, many mothers must go back to work after their pregnancy, and it can be very difficult to breast feed their baby. If you are committed to using only breast milk. You can still use a breast pump to help pump and store the breast milk, if you can’t see your baby during your work shift. If you go this route, I would highly suggest investing in an automatic breast pump. They are much easier than the manual ones, and will save you a lot of time.
If you are anything like my husband and I, we tried to use the all breast milk method for about half a week. Until we had run out one night, and needed to use some formula to go back to sleep. We began to start to using a combination method of both formula and breast milk from that point on. I wanted to make sure and do both methods, so that I would still be able to breast feed without my breasts drying up. The formula was more expensive than breast feeding, but it was much more convenient, and was a lifesaver in those instances when I ran out of breast milk. Also, after 9 months of pregnancy, it was nice to be able to go out for a couple of adult beverages.
Regardless of which way you decide to go, the important thing is to be prepared. This will be the last of your worries after delivery. Breast milk is healthier and cheaper than formula, but depending on your situation it may not be ideal and could be difficult to pull off. I would suggest trying a combination method, and then tailoring it to your needs. Breast feeding is one of life’s great joys, and is a true bonding experience!
