What is a car seat base?

I was asking myself the same question the first time my wife started telling me we needed one. Turns out it is one of the best baby product purchases I have made since becoming a father. With traditional car seats you have to weave in the seat belt into the car seat every time you remove the seat. Talk about a pain in the butt, not to mention the last thing you want to worry about with the little one wanting all your attention. With the new state of the art car seats (like the Britax Marathon Car Seat) they have car bases you can install in each car you own. With these bases you click in the car seat and unclick whenever you want to remove the seat. All it takes to remove the seat is holding down on the button and pulling upwards on the seat. The units typically run  around $40 to $50, but are worth every penny. We purchased 3, one for each of our cars, and one for our parents who help watch our daughter during the week. They are  very easy to install and can be done within 5 minutes. My parents even laughed at first when I offered to let them have a base. They had 5 boys and never used a car seat base, why would they need one now? Needless to say, my parents would never go back after experiencing the convenience of a car seat base.

Where can I get one?

I purchased mine on Amazon.com. They had an offer for free shipping and had a lot of good reviews to read, and make sure I was getting the right one. Expect to spend up to $50 depending on which car seat model you have. Trust me, the convenience of a car seat base in each car is well worth the extra expense. I did not install mine before my wife went into labor, and before we could take the baby home from  the hospital I had to have the car seat base installed. I guess I was not paying attention in class when they told us about that one. We live in Texas and actually tied the record for most consecutive 100 degree days in a row that summer! Not exactly the kind of task you want to have to complete under such intense time and heat pressures. I was amazed at how easy it was to install. Much to my surprise it took less than 5 minutes, and most of the time was spent trying to find anchors to attach the base to. The rest of the time was spent tightening the straps down to ensure a snug fit. I had it ready to go and the car pulled up to the hospital to get my wife, before she could make it down stairs. Check out Amazon.com and click on some reviews, to hear some testimonials from people who have owned and used the products.
